Lawn Bowling 101
history
a very brief recap of lawn bowling history...
from Sir Francis Drake to the far reaches of the old English empire where the sun never set, lawn bowling is part of a long lineage of similar bowling games once played by the Egyptians over 5,000 years ago. although the Brits in 1664 created the first official bowling green in Mannahatta, the Dutch 60 years prior are considered the pioneers of the game in the new world by throwing bowls in what it is now lower Manhattan. the old bowling green in the present day financial district is sadly long gone but our edition in Central Park has been bowling its heart out since 1926. for more in depth information on lawn bowling's history, check out:

lawn etiquette
quick lawn tips by Dong
When a player on the mat is about to deliver a bowl, other players should not move about, either at the head or at the mat end. The skip, vice (in triples), or lead should stand more than six feet behind the jack, except when indicating the position of bowls. Please be as quiet as possible.Communication, strategy, and concentration are keys to winning winning games. Use accepted hand signals during the game instead of shouting. Leads and vices should be aware of their skips' directions for using forehand or backhand - and queries such as who is up or down or how close the bowl is to the jack. Skips should go over the signals with their teams before the games begins. Indicate shot results by slapping a shoulder for each shot up and slapping the thigh for each shot down - before the opponent steps on the mat.Leads should rake the bowls after each end. However, do not disturb the head or rake until all the shots have been played and the score has been agreed upon. Disputes should be resolved by the skips. If the skips do not agree, the designated umpire or the games/tournament chair makes the final decision.Smoking and talking on cell phones are not permitted on the bowling green while playing a club game or tournament.Do not applaud if your opponent makes a bad shot; it could happen to you. Shake hands all around before and after the game.If you have suggestions, questions, or concerns, please consult with an officer or director of the club. We encourage you to read the USLBA booklet "Code of Bowling Etiquette" on pages 68 and 69, as well as the rules of the sport of lawn bowling.
First off, club games on Saturday and Sunday alternate between North/South and East/West, and rinks are set up on different colored markers each day. Managing the use of greens in this way helps preserve them and avoids excessive wear in any one area. Secondly, bowlers must wear soft, flat-soled shoes, preferably sneakers or lawn bowling shoes. Avoid bowling on soft, damp areas and bouncing or throwing bowls, which may dent the greens; rather, release them smoothly near ground level. When greens are wet, move the mat five or more yards from the dich if necessary. Repair divots with sand.Thirdly, walk along borders when possible, except when playing. And do not cut into other bowler's rinks while they are in play. Finally, what you bring inside, please remove upon leaving. Pick up empty cups or other debris inside the fenced playing area and along the walk. Put them in garbage containers upon leaving the greens. If you smoke, please extinguish cigarettes outside of fenced bowling area prior to entering playing area.

club games, tournaments and clubhouse
Club GamesClub bowling normally begins on Saturdays at 1pm and Sundays at 1:30pm.. It is the responsibility of members to see that jacks, mats, arrows, and rakes are set up before the game and removed from the green at conclusion of play. Also, return club bowls to designated club lockers and not to your own.TournamentsWe have club tournaments for members only and also open tournaments. Members receive the schedule before the season begins, and it is posted on this website. A bi-monthly email-newsletter will also keep you informed. Check the bulletin board for sign-up sheets or changes during the season. If you sign up for a tournament, but later find that you cannot attend, you must inform the tournament director or president.ClubhousePart of our dues pay for a cleaning service, supplies, and equipment such as club bowls, rakes, mats, and jacks. Much effort by our members goes into making this facility a pleasant one. When you can, lend a hand in keeping the clubhouse neat.If you have any questions about these guidelines, please feel free to ask your mentor, our Membership chair, any officer, or director.

New Members
Dear New Member:Welcome to the New York Lawn Bowling Club!Everyone has questions when they start, so please feel free to ask any of us. You may be wondering about terminology, the special points of etiquette and how best to play a shot in certain situations. Many of your questions may be answered within the posted documents to the right side of this page including tips, rules and advice on bowl delivery. If any of these documents are difficult to read online, our member John Nugent at jmacnugent_gmail.com will be happy to send along the original PDFs. The club web site is a wonderful resource, and I encourage you to check it out periodically--especially "The Events and Calendar" page which lists tournaments and when the greens may be closed for repairs (every other Tuesday).Club games begin promptly at 1 PM on Saturdays; 1:30 PM Sundays. Try to arrive one half hour early. On weekends, playing members are expected to wear whites and flat sole shoes (not waffle soles). You can bowl during the week; most afternoons you can find members bowling after work. We have an Open House on Monday at 5:45pm through July so please join us. We also have an email club newsletter that updates members on recent club games, winnings and upcoming events. Please make sure your email spam filter does not block these important newsletter updates.Club bowls are available for new members for the first season. These bowls must be available for all members and visitors; thus, no set is permitted to be stored in a personal locker. After the first year, we encourage members to purchase their own bowls; some used bowls are available at discounted rates. Check with our Merchandising Manager, Hayden Howell - haydenphowell_gmail.com Starting this season, due to limited locker space, we are asking that all lockers be shared. Further, lockers will be rented to members who need to store their bowls at the Lawn Sports Center. Any lockers that are available after fulfilling the needs of members who own a set of bowls will then be rented to other members. We look forward to seeing you on the greens in the near future. Happy bowling and once again: Welcome!Sincerely,Alan Winson, President, NYLBC
